Letter to Families:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to formally introduce myself. I am a Masters In Teaching graduate student at Seattle University, performing my student teaching in Mrs. Rubstello’s biology class. I already spent some time in your student’s classroom during the winter and am excited to be full-time student teaching as of March 24th. You may recall signing a videotape release form for me back in December. Thank you. This allows me to videotape some of my lessons this spring for the edTPA, a new comprehensive teacher certification process in Washington State.
While I am a new student teacher, I am not new to Garfield. During my undergraduate studies at Seattle University, I assisted students in Y-Scholars after school tutoring (then called Urban League Scholars) and various science classrooms. I am drawn to the teaching profession both by my love for biology and desire to mentor students in preparation for the adult world. I believe science is best learned through doing. I intend to integrate my experience working with sea turtles in Costa Rica and connections with the Pacific Science Center to bring your student an enriching education.
During the spring, I will teach your student a unit on evolution as it relates to genetics and ecology. We will cover mechanisms for evolution, evidence of evolution in the past and present, and the role of humans in evolution. I understand that this topic can be controversial for some families. Therefore, I will post more information about this unit, a schedule, and resources for you and your student on my webpage at www.phelanbiology.weebly.com. We will conclude the year with a focus on ecology and some extended student-driven biology exploration.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at [email protected]. I am also available after school most days if you would like arrange a time to meet.
I am looking forward to the learning adventures that await for your student and I this spring.
Sincerely,
Katelen Phelan
